I personally would not be too worried about that behaviour, the one being picked on didnt look to disturbed by it.

Agreed, behaviour looks pretty much normal to me. Would not worry too much.

Though have to say I love the wood you have in that tank, nice set up :)

I also agree.  That one fish (almost certainly a male) is very dominant though, but as long as it doesn't progress beyond this, I think you should be fine.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone.

I love the wood too, that's why it isn't just a bare quarantine tank, thinking of possibly incorporating it in to the 300l where I have a plant I don't really like, set it up the same way once all fish have been quarantined, as so far I have had no fatalitys our illnesses, so 4 more weeks to go.

All,

I found this thread as I've got similar issues with two angels in my tank. Lets say the advice given at the time of purchase clearly wasn't amazing.

I have a solid black and a gorgeous koi coloured (as we call it) with lovely luminescent blue highlights.

In the last few weeks / months they've started to compete more and more - its a lot like the two videos shown here above. However, given that they are both a decent size now (about 4 inches across and 6-7 inches vertical height), I'm unsure on my next move.

I've got a 240L Fluval 4ft tank with a large external filter (name escapes me), running on 65% alfagrog insert, its planted on a sand base with extra moss and alfagrog lumps thrown into the general rock areas with 4 pieces of bog wood of various sizes and some hides etc.

In terms of fish, I've got: 1 common plec (it came from a stunted tank originally, so she's only about 9 inches long at 5 years old), 2 bristlenoses (grown nicely to 4 inch), red tail shark / loach, albino ruby shark, two booseman rainbows, 4 black widow tetras, 2 sharpea tetras (peaceful), 6 emperor tetra, a pair of aged bronze cory (about 4 / 5 years old now) and the angels.

The odd shoal sizes are due to age and remnants of original larger sized teams - the black and sharpea tend to hang out together without drama.

The tank itself is peaceful. The sharks have their own hides / areas they like to patrol and I give them a regular serving of plec tablets, cucumber etc to prevent competition on the ground becoming unhealthy. In terms of tank chemistry, I check the water monthly now because its always bang on the bottom of the scale (except nitrates which come out my tap v high, but not harmed the fish). So I only do a small water change / clean up every 6 weeks or so.

So what I'm asking the specialists out there is...what do you think I should do ?

1) Acquire more baby angels and add them in ? If so, could I get 2 more or 3 more ? Unsure of tank requirements. Mine are happy to eat off top and bottom.
2) Rehome the black one, as that is the challenger most of the time
3) If 2, then do I need a solitary angel, or could I add in babies and let them expand into a shoal ?

I should add, we've added the emperors into the tank in last few months without any drama. So smaller fish can join okay.

Thanks !

I can't see anything in the video that I'd call aggressive. Perhaps I should get a video of my two and shock you!

Cichlids are bossy and aggressive ... I often wonder how Angelfish got that name because Angels they are not!

On to Matt ... I wouldn't try to add any new angels now if your existing pair are the size you mention. By now they will have established a territory and adding any further angels is likely to create all out war. You could re-home the aggressor if you really can't cope with seeing them bicker.

On a side note: maybe we need a pinned post about buying and keeping cichlids with video's of what to expect from behaviour and how many to keep, minimum tank requirements etc. I'm happy to video my pair of angels when they start 'bickering'. They are currently contemplating spawning and so are knocking each other about quite a bit

Any idea on how to sex them ? Silly question maybe, but maybe would help if I knew if I had two boys...

sexing is really difficult and I'm no expert. If you can get a photo of each one from the side (I need to see the head shape) I'll have a go but bare in mind this will only be a rough guess

I'll try and get a video of them when they are playing up. Its going to be tough on the black one - its a pre-used tank with a painted black background. When I first got it the ballast had blown, so I was trying to find a shark by its tail and an angel by its movement against a black background...

sometimes the males are really easy to sex as some have a lump on their heads known as a Nunchal hump - this is why I was asking for a side view of their heads. There is another way but I've not got it totally right yet - again it goes on the shape of the head and I did post a link on here somewhere. If I can remember where it was I'll come back and link it. That way you can have a go yourself
