i want to get atleast 2 pairs how many should i start with? they will be in a tank with platys in a 40 gallon

i would get 4 and hope you have a pair. most say get 6 to get a for sure pair. which you cvould get 6 but would have to get rid of some as they grew older. something else you might want to keep in mind, when they start breeding they will get very aggressive, as cichlids do, and will need to be seperated.

The only way to sex angels is when they are actively spawning. There is no way any shop could get in all males or all females by choice. I sell angels to shops, any shop asking for all males or all females is a shop I won't sell to. They are obviously poorly informed as to the fish they want to purchase. I set my standards high, and won't sell fish I breed or own to a shop I wouldn't buy fish from.

If you want to do the math, follow the chart and figure out the odds of having all one sex on 50 angels, a common amount I sell. If 8 fish is 0.8%, 9 fish would be 0.4%, 10 would be 0.2%

And you are missing an important point if you are going to breed platys and angels do not go together angels need soft water and platys Hard

I c

I bought 4 small angels at one time based on their colors. I ended up with one pair. The other two left over were males, and that makes for a nasty, mean tank!!! Now I have three very large males and they are all in separate tanks. My female died (long story). Make sure if you do not get a pair, your lfs will take the others back back on trade (mine would not) unless your willing to supply more tanks.

Angels don't need soft water, and platys don't need hard water. I breed angels by the thousands in straight tap water, gH 200, kH 110, tds 210, pH 7.7. That isn't soft. I know plenty of folks who have bred platys in soft water, platys will breed in nearly any water.

Dam right platys will, they are horny adaptible beasts! :shifty:
