Hi all,

Just bought a pair of angel fish to celebrate tank's cycling :)

Once i got them home though, i noticed one of them has an upside down pectoral fin. Is this anything to worry about or am i just being over cautios?

They seem to be getting around ok.

Thx

FFM

EDIT: Just checked and found out my tank is only 14 or so inches high, is this too small to keep the fish?

The angel with the deformed fin should be fine, although I would try to bring it back for another if possible. It seems that even without the angels you are maxed out stock wise, add in the angels, and it's an overstocked tank, a touchy situation with any tank, especially a recently cycled one. 10 gallons is considered the minimum for an adult angel.

14" is a bit too shallow for adult angels, 16" is usually considered the minimum, especially if they are veils. Don't want them doing the jaws thing with the top fin out of the water!

Some people keep neons with angels, they are angelfish food in the wild. I think this depends on the angels you have more than anything else. If they start to dissapear, you'll know where they are going.

If those platys in your sig are intended for breeding and kept in the tank with the angels you won't see any platy fry for long, if at all. This is a good way to keep the angels fed, they will grow good & healthy on live food.

So it appears that just about every aspect of my tank is wrong for angels :/

I'll talk to the folks about taking them back. Doubt it though, my mum is in love with them. Maybe ill wait untill my tank is too small then take them back.

Thx for your help Tolak, any more advice appreciated

I once had the same problem with an angel I bought... one of it's pectoral fins was "floppy" so to speak and it could not use it. It died the next day, not sure if it was from trauma or injury or whatnot. Hope this doesn't happen with yours.

If you are going to keep the angels with the breeding platys, there are some things you can do to give the fry, along with the neons, a better chance. Get some plastic plants, pull off the base & let them float on the surface. This gives the fry a place to hide. A small pile of rocks gives them a place to hide also, just keep an eye on the rocks, sometimes the adult platys will try to get at the fry and get hung up in there.

If you keep an eye on your water, & keep up on water changes, you can get by for a while with an overstocked tank. Doubling up on the filtration is a must. I've got a 20 long with triple the required filtration that is way overstocked, a temporary quarintine situation for some fish I picked up last week. I do 50% water changes twice a week on that tank.

He seems to be doing ok for now. He is eating well, just has trouble in the stronger currents.

Doubling up on the filtration is a must.

How much filtration minimum is needed to keep this tank going then and what type of filter is best to add?

It filters 300 L/H atm, but i wouldnt be against getting another filter, im not going to go and spend a fortune though. Once i get my next tank i will just switch it over with some of the fish to bring it back into the green.

Thx for the help guys.
