And Who's Been Eating My Fins!

did that female by chance have a beard (gills that puffed out just like the male)? sometimes Plakat males get mislabled as females.

And yes, no male + female combo. they will fight as well.

edit: melafix is not so much a "medication", so you aren't going to do any harm if you dose correctly. I would think that you need a much smaller tank to treat a betta tho. A lot of medication has to go into 80 gallons. As with the large community tank, there is probably too much current in there. i was thinking that was a temporary quarantine.

Or Breed :hyper: lol

I cant imagine a male and a female being kept in an 80 gallon doing too much damage to eachother, its not like they dont have room to escape the other. Fish have a lot of grey areas its not all black and white, what doesnt work for one may work for another. Im not condoning putting a male and a female together unless its for breeding purposes, but in a tank that size it could work no problem. :hey:

if its a qt tank it is most likely bare, so yes the male and female still could hurt each other.

the only way I would do it would be to have a massively planted tank, with tons of caves and hideing spaces, and still I would be worried that they would kill each other.

Hey all, new ^_^

Yes putting a male and female together (unless you plan on breeding, then they need to be monitored very closely) can only result in bad things happening. Separate them, find a nice tank for you females and buy a few more so they can properly create a pecking order, and it wont just be one fish bossing the other about!

First off all I have mislead you, my quarantine tank is 80 litres not gallons, sorry.

I only intend to keep the male in quarantine until he is better and I can give him to a friend or back to the LFS. Also, I have only filled my quarantine tank half full (40 litres)
I use a Eheim ProBall (I Think!) turned down low, so not much flow, is that best for a Betta?

When my female met the male they both puffed out thier cheeks whick looked identicle. Actually my females look very similar to NewFishy's photo, albeit different colours.

OHHHH. well then. that tank is absolutely fine. That makes much more sense.

everyone else is straying a bit off topic........ we've established that males and females are a no go  . Quit with the speculation.

The "female" sounds much like a male to me. If you can get a picture we can help you identify them (there are others on this forum that are better at IDing fish than me).

back to your original prob of the fin nibbling, we had to move 2 baby peppered corys out of our male fighters tank after i caught them several times happily munching on berts tail as it was draping on the sand! he now has 2 pandas in with him & ive never seen them do the same thing. i think the corys didnt set out to munch the fins but stumbled upon it in front of them whilst they were whiskering around , had a nibble & thought yum!
