I am not exactly a beginner, but I am new here, so here goes.

It is my birthday soon and I want an external flter for my 35 gallon tank.

I have never had one before, at the moment I have a fluval 4 and fluval 3 running - they create a really big current and mostly as I sit at my desk I can see my guppy fry wizz past....not exactly relaxing for me or them. mind you they do keep swimming in to the current so maybe they enjoy it.

It is a planted tank but not done with any kind of plan in mind, it has livebearers and two key hole cichlids and a false flying fox. it is over stocked, I need to get rid of guppy fry. the Keyholes are on a diet it would seem.

generally I like to over filter - due to work I sometimes don't get home to W/C, I know filtering doesn't replace W/Cs it just makes me feel better.

It has to be very straight forward to use. I have real trouble taking the fluval 4 apart my hands just aren't big enough to get round it to pull it apart.

I have no idea about external filters. All I know is they sit under the fish tank and not in it.

so suggestions, comments, prices,

thank you

Lucy

An Eheim 2213 will fit very well and at around £50 (fully inclusive) is great value for money. They outflow should be fine, but if the curent is too great, direct the spraybar to the back of the glass instead.

Edit: I have one, and can recommend it :)

I don't have an external, I have a fluval 2+ in my cold water tank and an eheim internal in my tropical but I've read a lot of good things about eheim in general and if I had to buy another it would definitely be an eheim.
