hey i ahve just bought some ammonia from the shops and was wondering how much i would have to put in a 65gal tank to get it to 3-5ppm(this is for the fishless cycle). the bottle says that there is 40grams/L of ammonia in the bottle. the bottle has nothing else in it so im assuming it is safe for using it in my aquarium.

ps i just smelt it and it hurt......badly.

luckily, conversion is rather simple. 1mg/L = 1ppm.
So if you want 4ppm of NH3, then you want 4mg/L.
The bottle has 40g/L concentration, so you need to add .1mL per L of aquarium.
65 US gallon = 246.1 L, so 246.1 x .1mL = 24.6mL. That's about 5 tea spoons (US).
But chloramine in tap water will additional ammonia on top of that.

Yeah, imagine breathing that stuff 24/7, for over a month!

BTW, don't forget to add the tap water conditioner. I remember one guy who insisted that fishless cycling doesn't work. Turns out, he forgot to add the tap water conditioner.

Good advice.

Yeah... anything at 10% or more concentration of ammonia... you really should avoid sniffing it. Bad stuff. Drop 1 tablespoon in and see how that effects your NH3 reading. Should be pretty easy to work out from there...

Good luck!
