i have camee home today tested all my aquriums and have and ammonia in my qt tank it is a 190l

here is the test

nitrate 5 - 10
ph 8.3
ammonia 0.50
nitrite
salt 1024

how much of a water change would you do???

Hi
What is the tank stocked with?
How long has it been set up?
What for of filtration are you running?

Josh

hi josh

it has been set up for 3 years

it has a juv koran angel that is 2"

it is a fluval 405 filter
also have protine skimmer
and uv sterriliser

regards scott

How long has the fish been there? If you left it empty for a while, the bacteria on the fluval will have died, which is why you have the ammonia.

I have to agree with neontetra.
With it being a quaratine tank, im asuming you dont use it alot for fish but keep it running incase.
However, like neontetra said, after the tank has been empty of fish for some time, the bacteria in the fulter will ahve died. An i you only recently added the angel, the filter is cycling again.
I would reccommend doing a 20-30% water change every other day to keep the ammonia down untill the tank has cycled.
However, you would be better off with moving the fish to another tank becayse the ammonia could cause the fish to die.

How long has the fish been in there becuase if it has been in there for a while, it might be something else?

Josh

the qt tank has never been left empty after that fish comes out i go down to lfs and get another fish and it never had an ammonia and only 1 fish goes in at a time and the angel has been in qt for 11 weeks then a blue spot angel goes in next

thanks scott

Something had to have died. That causes ammonia.

I'd move your angel into your main tank as keeping it in this water will only cause it stress making it more vulnerable to disease and it may even kill it too.

Maybe you are over feeding the fish that youre keeping in the tank.
However, since you always have a fish in there I doesnt seem like it could be the filter, unless it is too small for the tank.
Like kj says, I would move the angel sooner rather than later and before you get the queen angel in there, deffinatly do some decent water changes to get the amonia down again.

Is it possible that a snail or something died? That would cause an ammonia spike. There are chemicals you can add that will make the ammonia into a harmless form but it still can be ussed by the bacteria. I would do this or remove the fish to the main tank. Don T.

it a qt tank it contains copper so no inverts moved the angel into the other qt tank with contains a pair of maroon clowns so that qt that dose have an ammonia leave that empty with no fish of will the filter hold the bacteria

the bacteria in the filter will die over time w/out food. The only proper food are fish in it....or putting a prawn in a micron sock and setting it in the tank to create ammonia to jump start cycling.

Be careful w/the maroons and your new angel. I guess marroon's can be quite nasty

when i use copper treatment the skimmer get turned off for 2 weeks and then goes back on for 2 days could that couse an ammonia i the tank and the tank is cycled it been set up for years

well you just answered your own question. you are running copper in your quarantine system. Copper will kill off your biological bacteria to a degree, as most meds will.

Do a 30% water change and just keep an eye out on it. Things like prime will also help out as will the addition of live bacteria on a regular basis while treating with the copper regiment.
