I just tested my ammonia levels and it seems to be going from 4.0mg/l to 2.0mg/l in less than twelve hours so should i top it up to four again now or leave it to morning when it gets to 0mg/l

depends whether your following add and wait, or add daily method. if add and wait, you should really wait for it to drop below 0.25ppm then raise it back up - probably wouldn't do any harm adding early, but if you kept doing it then it'd take even longer to clear your nitrites (without a water change)
