Hi

I'm in my fifth week of a new 10g tank. I had 6 jumbo neons to begin with and i got myself a couple of amano shrimp and a very small leopard catfish at the weekend.

Although i have plenty plants in there i'm still getting algae building up which was the reason for the shrimps. My sword plant leaves were tuning yellow so i removed them and added flora boost the other day. My ammonia levels were fine until i tested them tonight and it came back with a 0.6 reading from being 0 before shrimp and catfish additions. I'm sure the reason for this is the constant flow of shrimp waste in the tank. I can't get over how much they leave around. I know they eat all the time but whoa!

I changed about 15% water afterwards and used the gravel vac to scoop some poop so hopefully levels will go down again. I know it's not a serious level but i'm worried that the shrimps are producing too much waste? I'm not sure the catfish has settled in well as its spending the majority of the time between the back of the filter and the glass. Is this common? I have other areas it could easily hide but it seems to want to spend its time hidden away by the suction pads.

I'm worried i've overstocked too soon. The neons are swimming fine and are eating healthy and have good colour. Shrimps are just eating and pooping and Def is just hiding.

I am being vigalent but need advice as this is the first tropical tank i have undertaken and don't want the wee guys to come to a premature end.

Advice much appreciated.

Substrate - gravel
6 Jumbo Neons
2 Amano Shrimp
1 Leopard Catfish - 1.5"

If the water quality gets really bad the shrimps will probably die-they need really good quality water and wont tolerate high ammonia etc. I would get 3 to 5 catfish really-they like to shoal and wont like being on their own. Shrimps produce some waste but not as bad as some algae eaters. I would keep doing 10% changes daily to keep the ammonia down. Keep monitoring it.
