i found a product by fluval called ammonia remover, anyone got any feedback to what this sort of stuff is like? is it the sort of thing to avoid

There really is no need to use any chemicals if you have properly cycled your tank!! Adding chemicals that aren't necessary may have negative effects further down the line. I'd stay away from it...look after your filters and dont overstock and you wont have to worry about the ammonia!

Like scorphonic said - you don't really need it... but if you are having high ammonia readings and want them gone fast - the stuff does work - I've used Fluval's and Marineland's White Diamond (same thing) on a short-term basis and both have been great.

Anything that removes ammonia is bad for your tank. It will prevent your tank from cycling if it isn't already and if your tank is cycled you shouldn't have any ammonia anyway. If you are cycling with fish and have an ammonia problem, I suggest you try to lower it with frequent (as many as 2 or 3 a day if needed), small water changes or as a last resort, using a product like Ammo-Lock that changes ammonia to a non-toxic form. I don't like the chemicals since you still get an ammonia reading and it is supposed to be non-toxic, but for me there would always be that worry as or whether it really was or not.

Thanks for the feedback, basicaly ive done a lot of things wrong with setting up my tank, due to the lack of research, my ignorance and what my local fish shop have said ive set up a tank without cycling and filled it up with fish :( .now its been about a week and a half and my tank is now infected with white spot. Ive bought medicine to treat it and its asked me to take out my carbon filter which if im right holds most of the good bacteria (not that theyl be much there), ive been waiting for about 2 weeks for a test kit which i orderd online so i dont know what my ammonia levels are like, will this ammonia remover be ok for the meantime while i dont have the carbon filter if i have high levels.
I now realise my mistakes and will make sure i do it right in he future. i am doing frequent water changes and he fish seem ok.

Your ok to remove the carbon filter. It doesn't contain the bacteria (or at least not that many). The carbon is usually only put into a filter to remove medicines from the water. So dont put it back in until you have finished treating the fish. Leave it in for a day or two then to remove all the medicines and you can take out the carbon sponge then...its not necessary to keep it in the filter.

ah ok cheers, again ive been mis-informed by the fish shop..........trial and error i sopose.
thanks again for the info

If your tank is still cycling, you probably don't have enough bacteria to worry about so removing the carbon won't matter much. A lot of medications also wipe out the bacteria colony so the one you are using may have already done that. I have never used the ammonia removing sponges so I can''t speak from experience as to how well they work. I would be more apt to try the products that detoxify them as opposed to removes them.

Just keep up the frequent water changes. That will keep the ammonia levels lower. Also, although I'm not very knowledgable on diseases, I do know that slowly raising the temperature is helpful in treating white spot.
