I have been looking for ammonia for some time and finally my mom mentions seeing it at walmart when she was there. WALMART. Interesting.

She also mentioned she didn't want any smell coming down through the vents which got me to wondering..
Does ammonia have a smell when in an aquarium? I mean when you cycle with it (I used a different method to cycle in previous tanks.)

I know it'll smell a little, ammonia is after all, the urine smell. Really I was just wondering if it'll smell up the whole house if I use it? It's summer, so I can cover the vents and keep the door to the room closed and window open (unless nature decides to throw another tornado at us, hope not.)

Odd question I know.

I don't remember it smelling once it was in the tank, and at 4ppm, it's so dilute, I'm sure it wouldn't do.

I"m finding it doesn't smell once in the aquarium (just don't sniff it out of the bottle!

You'll want to shake the bottle to make sure it doesn't foam; a few bubbles that pop immediately are fine, if it foams don't use it. Also check the ingredients on the label, make sure it doesn't say anything about surfectants, dyes, or perfumes. If it does, don't use it. (this is the only kind my local Walmart had, although yours may be different, so just really check it and shake it to be sure).
