I have added a picture of my sick platty!
Not sure what to do for her, managed to get ammonia to o.10 ish, lots of water changes etc lol
Hello All

I have setup a new 160 litre tank, I moved all the old mature media from the old tank that had been up and running for a year but I still have ammonia at .25!

I am doing daily water changes but it's a bit of a bind taking out 100 lires plus everytime!

I have sent a couple of pm's to a couple of users who will provide some more mature media but have not had a reply, is it possible for someone to send me some or doeas anyone live near banbury oxfordshire?

I was really hoping to avoid any cycling of the tank as there are 14 fish in there (only platties) so far they are doing ok but I dont really want to exposed them to the ammonia for too long hence the huge daily water chnages!

Any help greatly appreciated

Thanks

A few questions for you.....

How many fish were in the tank that the mature media came from, and what percentage of that media did you place in the new tank.

Let's say you took the media from a tank that also had 16 platies, but you only took 10% of the media. It will take a few days for the bacteria colony to multiply and meet the needs of the new tank.

How exactly did you transer the media? Was it all moved out and in within an hour, or was there time for the media to dry out between the move?

For the 0.25 reading, can you be 100% that is true? Have you compared it to a sample taken from your tap or bottled water to ensure there is actually a green tinge to the tank sample?

ok The old 60 litrer tank had about 24 fish in it (hence I bought a bigger one ha ha) no casualties in at least 6 months although overcrowded!

I took 100% of the old media for the new tank and had a 2nd filter that had been running for a few weeks along side the old one, this one stayed in the old tank, there are only 6 small platties in there and ammonia is at zero on that tank. there is a lot of gravel in it still as well.

The media did not dry out as it was transferred instantly!

Did a test on tapwater to get a base reading and it came back pale yellow, all my tests from the big tank have been yellow with a hint of green, I would say between 0.10 and 0.40.

The fish still seem very very happy, the pregnant cory female laid all her eggs last night and she had been holding on to them for at least two months!

Sorry just bumped this as I have added a picture of my sick platty!
