I use the API master test kit. I have recently started my fishless cycle and added approximately 5-6 ppm of ammonia. I say approximately because the test kit jumps frpm 4ppm to 8ppm, and comparing the green liquid to that of on the tst card is a little tricky.. i started it on sunday night, and have not noticed any drop in ammonia (maybe not such a surprise), but it does make you wonder if I added too much and anything over 4ppm just looks pretty darn green..

I used the following calculation to work out how much to put in (using your bucket test too)

so.. 5ppm

if 1 litre is 1000 ml, then 1000 litres is 1 million ml...

then 5ml of pure ammonia is 5 ppm in that soltion..

so

100,000 would require 0.5 ml

10,000 (ten litres) would require 0.05ml of ammonia

the solution is only about 10% ammonia, so that would need 0.5ml of my solution

so i tested this and it went green (somewhere over 4ppm, but not entirely sure)

so..

my 180 litre tank would require 180 * 0.5 =9ml of my solution..

so thats what i did. to monitor this to make and sure it was not overkill, when should i see the first noticeable drop (have added venturi to filter output to add man many bubles and surface adgitation). And.. if i see X ppm of nitrites, then how much should my ammonia have droped. This would enable me to see if I did it right, as if my nitrites were very high, and the ammonia reading was still green, the i know i am in trouble, and should perhaps swap out some of the water....

Am i making any sense.. (im a fishless cycling virgin)

Cheers

I just poured some in for my fishless cycle and it went straight up to 8ppm +. So then I just waited till it dropped to 2ppm before adding more. Not the most calculted method but it seems to be cycling fine. So I wouldn't worry to much even if you have added too much. :D

Thats the kinda reply i was looking for.. ;)

Thanks and have a good weekend.!
