Hey.. i've always been viewing this section of the forum cuz i love the way planted tanks look, but i've never posted cuz i dont know jack about plants/planted aquariums

But today when i went to my LFS, i only went for some fish food.. but i saw a plant which i at once recognized as amazon sword.. i decided to buy it, because i noticed a lot of people on this site have it.. so i thought, i could always get advice etc... and that's exactly what i need.. i know it might seem noobish.. but i'm just starting out.. and will hopefully end up with a planted tank in the future.. so i'm starting slow to get the hang of it...

So i bought it.. and it came in a pot.. and the lady at the store told me to just put it in my tank like that.. pot and all... So at once i was confused.. cuz i was thinking that i've never seen pots on this site.. but i took it anyway.. but when i put it in my tank.. i thought the pot looked really foreign and unnatural in terms of the aquarium (which kinda defeated the purpose of why i bought it.. to make my aquarium more natural to my fish).. so i took it out of the pot and put it in my gravel.

Was this a bad move? or is it okay? cuz if it dies, it would be a total mess, and i wont be home for the next few days.. but my sister will handle the feeding.. but if something happens.. she wont be able to do anything... so what should i do? leave it? or what?

I know this is really basic stuff etc. but i'm starting from scratch.. and i wanna do everything right, so if anyone wants to help me.. and possibly coach me through my beginning days (jk :p)

Thanks in advance!

ps. i'm leaving in like an hour.. so i might not post till i get back..

well its good that you bought one plant, thats the right way to start, gotta get your feet wet before you dive right in. Anyways taking it out of the pot is a good idea, i never really understood the use of a pot in an aquarium. So my question to you is what kind of light are you running on your aquarium, and what is the wattage? Also how big is the tank? The reason i am asking you is because i want to get an idea as to what your wattage per gallon is. Then we can go from there.

ahh.. that's the prob.. i dont have a light.. just a normal lid.. and seeing as i buy everything for myself.. i'll have to have one custom made.. but where i have it, there and 9 overhead lights around the dining table, and i'm sure it gets more than sufficient light.. because it looks as thought it has its own lights when those lights are on.. so ill have to trust those lights until i can buy a lid with a light :(.. the tank is only around 10-15 gallons.. not exact though..

Thanks for your help.. and would it be okay to pm you for anything further? its okay if not...

I'd leave it in its pot. Just bury it, as from the sound of it you haven't got any beneficial substrate and the pots substrate wool is likely to still have a bit of nutrients in it. :)

that fine it will make nutrients from the fish waste and get light from you aquariam lights

Mr Convict just stated there are no aquarium lights, so my thought was to plant pot and all so as to cause as little distress to sword as possible as it's not going to bounce back with no light.

edit: spelling

as is the plant is already out of its pot.. it shouldn't hurt it too much..

but convict i do suggest that you get some sort of lighting.. such as a fluro fixture. without something similar your plant isn't likely to survive much. also after you get a light some trace ferts would be very beneficial, something such as seachem flourish.

other then that you shouldn't need much else for just starting. but read read read because once you get the first one going your going to want to add many more ;) its the "bug"
