I have an Amazon Sword in my tank that is planted next to my CO2 ladder. The plant seems to be doing really well and has even got an offshoot growing right up to the surface with its own leaves and roots.

Today i have noticed a steady stream of bubbles coming off one of the leaves of the main plant, they are tiny but show no sign of slowing down. They are coming at about 5 every second and every so often a single larger bubble floats up.

I thought at first they were coming from the gravel in the bottom of the tank, but they are actually coming from about halfway up a leaf that has a kink in it.

Does anyone know what these bubbles are?

I'm not an expert, but I believe that is an abundance of oxygen being released by the plant... a good sign. :good:

Thanks. I was just a bit puzzled as its the only plant in the tank doing it!

that's probably because its so close to the co2 and is simply taking advantage of its position which just happens to be where the most co2 rich water is.

The term commonly used is "perling" :) When the plant is photosythesising fast it produces more oxygen, to the point of little bubbles forming. Definately a good thing!

IF its going in a stream of bubbles in one spot and not the whole plant. sounds like a broke vessel in the plant

It was a stream just in one spot. I was watching it last night and with all my lights on it was throwing out about 30 bubbles per ten seconds,i switched down to just my blue light and the bubbles went right down to about 2 or 3 in ten seconds.Put all the lights back on and within a minute they were coming off the plant at full stream again!

Sorry if i sound boring but ive never seen a plant do this before.

It could be a combination of pearling and a broken vessel :) Either way, its cool to watch. You just don't imagine plants doing something that you can actually watch. Like venus fly traps and other insect munchers :D

Yeah its pearling (and a combination of a broken vessel but dont worry about that :) ).

I cant remeber who said it on here but to quote "its cool when your tank looks like the inside of a soda bottle", I have to agree :)

Good sign anyway
