So...in the hybrid forum, someone mentioned Amazon Mollies and their lack of males in reproduction.

This got me extremely curious as is my nature.

Therefore, I'm wondering if anyone here has any of these interesting fish or may know where I could locate some. I will ask my local pet store if they can order me some, but if they are not readily available in the hobby, I doubt the store would have much success.

No pet store can order them in... vary rare I've only seen a couple of time in the UK

Their no males and the females need to breed with a different species of molly to induce then into producing fry..... I'm not sure how it works but they dont use the spem on the other species.

I know, that's what I found interesting about them. ;) How it works is that the sperm from the male gets inside the egg, but then it degenerates and the DNA in it isn't allowed to fuse with that of the egg.

I'm not in the UK, so that may be a little different since they are found naturally here in North America, but that doesn't mean the options of getting them are any better. I'll have to ask. :shifty:

I heard something like that and i know that their is a document with DNA testing saying that they think they may retain a small amount of DNA materail from the father but it's not under stood to how this happens.

I asked my local pet shop to see if they would be able to special order some, so I'll keep you updated and let you know, if I'm able to get any, what happens when bred to the same male multiple times. Maybe we can unlock some secrets, or at least some genetic code, and get some variants. :)

You do have to wonder, though, these selective females, would they shun guppy males? Might be worth testing. ;) I mean, if they DO retain some of the DNA material, couldn't that almost be like selective mutating? Maybe these females have more control over what happens than we realize... if I get some male babies popping out with sailfins, or something, we'll have to find a way to look into this more deeply. (They do have males born, but it's rare and they aren't really considered part of the species. Which, if you ask me, is poor scientific study.)

Like i said i not rearly done anything with these fish are only seen them once, but I belive that they produce 1 male in every 2,000 fish (lucky boy)

But if breed's with them like a normal male or the just treat him like another random male of another species i don't know, surly there must be some who knows more on them!!!!
