Hullo,

I have recently watched a video about lake tang. on youtube.

The video's is here

video

And the fish Iam going to mention are at 7 min in, and the mention of 'transvestite dwarves' is at 9.30.

They are shelldwellers the males of which are large and keep a harem of ladies in shells, they collect more shells to attract more females, the also pinch shells which have females in situ from other males.

But the bit which blew me away was the fact that the species has another type of male, which is the same small size as the females.
These little males sneak into the shells that the big male has carefully collected and fertilise the females inside!

Does anyone know the name of these amazing chaps?

Thanks, yes the video is amazing isn't it. I watched all 4 parts and was amazed by them all.

As I said in a previous post I originally wanted a tank of Malwi cichlids, but after watching the Lake tanganyiki cichlids in action Iam not so sure.

I think waht I would really like is mbuna, and some shell dwellers, if such a thing is feasible.

Mbuna and shelldwellers would be a bad mix. Mbuna will happily rip snails out of their shells for a snack, so I don't think the shellies would last long. And even if that weren't the case, both mbuna and shellies are bottom-dwellers and would compete for space.

Hmmm I thought somebody was going to tell me as much.

That is as good an excuse as any to have to get yet another new tank.

Thanks
