HI

Does anyone keep Amano Shrimp?
Are they as good as they are known to be at algae eating? I would love to have a few in my tank but i dunno if they are any good. They eat hair algea rite?

will they also eat small baby fish? I am trying to breed rams and cockatoos and would like to use my planted tank as a grow out after the fry gets around 8mm-ish.

thx in advance.

woops i just realised there is an invertebrates section..... can someone move this topic please.

Thanks

Hi jer
I keep ammano shrimp in my 70ltr planted tank (see post in picture section) They do eat algae but only if there is nothing else about, but you would have to have a lot of them to make a difference I would imagine. Don't forget you are feeding fry so there will be a lot of excess food around and in any case once the fry of the fish you are keeping grow they will make a short work of the ammano's. I would tend to look for an alterative algae eater maybe mollies or sml ottocinclus.
Hope this helps..

I think BigC hit on the main benefit of the Shrimp: They PREVENT algea and worse problems by cleaning up uneaten food.

i see. (Sorry.... long reply :/ )

but Ive already got 3 ottos, one red whiptail and two siamese algea eaters in me tank, so if i add like say, 3 amano shirimpys, they can do the food scavenging as well as hair algae eating right?

The only reason i am thinkin bout amano shrimp is that rite now my tank is growing a fair bit of hair algea, its not covering up everything, but i have a feeling its starting to. my siamese algea eaters dont seem to be helping much either. so amano shrimp will help?

I know i shud look for the underlying cause of the hair algae and kill that off first but im pretty sure i know the reason why the hair algae is growing and that will be fixed in less than 30 days. All the lighting and hardware stores in my area dont stock the Daylight (6000K) energy saving bulbs that i need, but i have ordered two from a lighting store but they said it will take around 30 days for the bulbs to arrive (Poland is not that great a country i dont think...needs to be more..um...developed? haha). So rite now i am jus using normal energy saving compact fluroscent bulbs (2700K). This shud be the reason why the hair algae is growing cos my plants cannot utilise the light emmited efficiently and so the nutrients in the tank are being used up by the hair algae. Plus the K rating of lights dont bother algae from the extent of my knowledge, they love ANY kind of light.

Well anyways, as long as i feed sparingly my shrimp will have no other choice other than to eat algae.

as for the baby fish (in the future), i mite jus set up a new tank for them then. haha :hey:

Mine don't eat hair algae or maybe a little, but do they need to? They are very nice addition to tank anyway.

Here's little something about amanos:

But before you take a shrimp you must think "worse" sides of shrimps. How much nitrate do you have in your tank. Shrimps need very clean water to stay alive and healty. They can't bare copper so that limits using some medicines. Or do you have fishes that will eat shrimps gladly...

The information you have supplied suggests that the shrimp are going to end up as a meal, that is the only reason I suggested alternatives...On the algae front, How long is your lighting on for and is you tank positioned near a window. Also try some floating plants like Salvinia.
