I have an 80L tank and am thinking of getting some amano shrimp. I've never kept them before, and am getting conflicting answers online when I try to find answers to these questions so was wondering if someone here could clarify.
- Are they OK with other small tropical fish (I currently have neon tetra, bronze corys and nerite snails)
- Is there a minimum number I should get, i.e. do they like to be kept in groups? I was initially thinking of getting ~3 to start but not sure if this is OK.

My Amanos are super chill, they like company but you do not need a large number so three is probably fine. They do get a bit frantic with food, so feed them first, then when they go away with the loot, feed the other fish. They are excellent cleaners, very curious and fun personality. Mine live with nerite snails, mystery snails, ramshorn snails, pea puffers, sparkling gourami, albino corydoras (not in the same tank).

They are definitely ok with small fish and non aggressive fish that you mentioned.
As long as you don't keep big fish, they should be fine.
But they can't breed in freshwater.

I prefer the colourful Neocaridina shrimps as they breed frequently.
But Neon Tetras and most fish will eat their fry.
Only fish like Chili Rasboras are safe for their fry.

Get more will be more interesting and you can see them more.

I’ve heard Amanos will go walkabout away from the tank!
I had em 20+yrs ago when they were known as japonica shrimps and I don’t remember this happening but I did lose a few which at the time I put down to the clown loaches or paradise fish eating them.

Is their interest in travel and meeting new people exaggerated?
Will they eat my hair algae?

Amano babies will not survive unless they are in brackish water, which makes them hard to breed. I have never seen mine leave the tank, but will climb on my hands just to check things out. They are very curious and absolute goofballs, and on occasion will eat hair algae.

Amanos are great--one of my favorite aquatic critters! A good number is about one per gallon/4 liters. They don't care about being in groups as far as I've seen, but bigger numbers are more interesting to watch and do a better job on algae. They are completely peaceful and ignore smaller fish except when they're stealing food from them. :) Bigger fish will eat them. Amanos do eat green hair algae, but not black brush. I have had a few go for a walk, so make sure your tank has a top that fits.

The top fits but the two slots for air pipes at the back will need plugging.
I’m getting some if they’re ok with RCS?

I think they'll get along fine with RCS. The slots might not be a huge worry. Mine only became major escape artists when the water parameters weren't good (I had not discovered test kits at that point) and they were searching for a nicer neighborhood.
