I have amano shrimp and Ghost shrimp in my 36g a few minutes ago I saw a small shrimp up against my glass and it had a brown stripe along its back. I beleive that a ghost shrimp would not have this as a baby. I know it is very unlikely that the amanos bred but is it possible that it is an amano and not a ghost shrimp?

Its probably just a ghost shrimp. Having a baby amano is like 1 in a million.

Amano shrimp can breed in fresh water but the babies normally don't survive as they need brackish water. Ghost shrimp can be various species but are normally see through and don't have the stripe.

My guess is the shrimp you think are Amano shrimp are actually a similar species whose young can survive in fresh water. A possibility could be Malaya Shrimp (http://www.petshrimp.com/malayashrimp.html) or Indian/Rainbow shrimp (http://www.petshrimp.com/indiashrimp.html) both of these could be mistaken for an Amano and can breed in fresh water.

Funnily enough theres a feature about the amano shrimp. Dead right shrimper, the babies cant survive without brackish water-none of mine ever have....

It couldn't be another species because I only have amano and ghost shrimp. Also today while I was doing a water change I found at least 2 more and the one i captured had a stripe on its back. if these are amano shrimp they have survived for a day. I moved the captured one to my 2.5g tank and hopefully he won't get eaten by my puffer.

See if you can get a photo because a true Amano shrimp really can't survive in fresh water when it is a larvae. Good luck though, i struggle to get good pictures of mine!

It could of been mis-labled at the lfs. I've recently got some shrimp i think are Malaya shrimp that were sold as Amano shrimp. The look similar to the Amano shrimp i already had but are definatly a different species. Malaya is the closest i've found browsing the internet. I'll post an ID thread if i can get a good enough picture!
