I think the problem with fetilising regimes is that every tank is different, with water parameters, lighting levels, plant bio-mass etc. There will never be a single simple method to suit every tank.

I've found with my tank. That I only dose nitrates to 10ppm after each water change. I dont add any phosphate every to my tank. But my tap water had phosphate levels of 2ppm anyway.

My tank has 2.5 WPG and very very very little plant bio-mass. All i have is a nice carpet of Glosso and some rocks covered in Java moss. Yet i have no algae. My first attempt at creating a simple planted layout using the EI method resulted in every type of algae appearing in my tank.

I believe the reason my current tank is algae free is because the Java Moss can grow in virtually any water conditions and my Glosso gets just about everything it needs from the substrate (mixture of Eco complete and Seachem Onyx Sand). My water column only contain nitrates.

Every tank is an independent little world, and each requires its own little rules.

Just my 2cents worth.

Hey all... I have added the article to the first post (so that you don't have to go hunting for it at a later date should the urge arrise.

Enjoy!

Amano has an article in there every issue btw. :D
If only we had quality planted articles in UK fishkeeping mags. :/

Practical Fishkeeping is the UK's bestseller and is running a planted article series at the moment.

Unfortunately the author appears to be stuck in the last century and insists that nitrates and phosphates are the planted tanks sworn enemy. No wonder that in the UK the hobby is so far behind the US and other countries. He hasn't even mentioned decent fluorescent lighting, he uses Mercury Vapour - how relevant is that to most of us?!!

At least I, and other hobbyists are doing our bit here on TFF to spread the word.

Rant over!

I agree completely, the guy is soooo out of date. The mercury vapour lights being the main thing that irks me. World of Water near me uses mercuy vapour lights and blimey they look awful! Again this is the problem, pre Amano looking at tank pictures in PFK could be quite inspiring, I used to get a sister magazine they published called Fishkeeping answers and one month they had a brilliant amazonian themed tank, which really inspired me to start keeping plants more. Looking at it now it looks really primitive but back then it wa s inspiring. I guess I'm trying to say like anything until you reach a certain level you are kinda ignorant of the really great stuff that's out there too.

Thanks for taking the time to post it Jen :)
