Am I Overstocked?

Hi everyone

I have a 260 litre fluval vicenza bow front planted aquarium filtered with a fluval 305. Have been thinking bout getting a 405 to replace.
Pics below but they are old, before it was planted and before my current stock.

My current stock is...

6 angelfish
I got 6 in hope 2 would pair which hasnt happened yet. The plan was to rehome the other 4 when 2 did pair. They are peaceful and if they remain that way I may keep all 6.
2 pearl gouramis
5 julii corys
12 dwarf neon rainbowfish
10 glowlight tetras and
2 common plecs
Now I know common plecs get huge and are way too big for my tank making me over stocked BUT they are very small at the mo, about 8cm in length and I plan to rehome them in afew months and get 1 BN plec to replace them.

So am I over stocked taking everthing into consideration?
Or am I under stocked? Or maybe just right?

Dont see any problems with quantity really. 405 wont me a huge improvement in all honesty.

Assuming I kept all 6 angels then, do I have room to add or not?

Well in my experience the Angelfish will fight as they grow. They need their own territory.

The plecos also should go - your argument of "Now I know common plecs get huge and are way too big for my tank making me over stocked BUT they are very small at the mo, about 8cm in length and I plan to rehome them in afew months and get 1 BN plec to replace them." makes no sense.... why didnt you just buy the BN?

"stocking" has been judged on personal preference, and so long as your fish have room to swim and nice clean filtered water whos to complain?
A rough guide is to use the inch per gallon rule

260 = approx 57g so you can in theory have 57 inchs of fish.

If you buy it to ADD to the tank and have both going then yes, massively. If you buy it to replace the 305, then no, not really.

For your information i got the the common plecs after a friend decided to strip down his tank.
I had no idea i had to go into extreme detail of how i aquired my fish just to have a chat about stocking.
When they start to outgrow my tank, then il rehome and get the BN. But until then they are fine.

And yes im aware that Angelfish apparently get aggressive as they mature but this isnt always the case as i have seen many set ups with multiple angels in that all get along! If they do become aggressive towards each other, then il take the appropriate actions. Like i said from the start, getting 6 was simply to get a pair.



Stocking isnt just personal preference when you want to stock to the maxium. You have to take oxygen, the bio filter and nitrate build up all into account too. Hense the reason for this topic.
And 260 litres is 68.6 gallons according to my converter, not 57.

Anyway I don't think anyone on this forum can accurately work out how much oxygen your fish consumes, how much oxygen will be able to dissolved into your water even if you have 2 filters, how much biomedia you'll need to maintain zero ammonia or nitrite etc. I stress the word accurately. Chances are that they will all be ok even if you get more fish. You can add lots of plants to compensate for the potential high nitrate production and to increase oxygen. I'm sure you can even pump oxygen into the tank if you want (won't be cheap).

Imagining the max size of your fishes I think you may be ok if you take out some of the angels. I think they will be fighting as they are cichlids afterall and need their space.

It's 68.6 US gallons (liquid), but 57 UK gallons. (That can be a bit confusing.)

I think that your stocking is ok. If were me, once everyone gets bigger I would loose a couple of the Angels even if they are getting along and of course the plecos. I thought that comment was rude also. Matt left the area of stocking opinions and got into opinions of your judgement.
