Hi all,

I hope im not being an idiot but this doesn't look like the standard hair algae I get in my other tanks?

Any ideas as to what it is, its only on the glass not on the plants as yet? Any advice as to how to deal with it?

NO3 - 20 (although I have just lowered this from 80ish after advice from people on here :))
PO4 - 1-2
Light - 3x 18w
Tank - 30x12x18 inches - 90lt
CO2 - single nutrafin - 20ppm
Ferts - leaf zone once a week

I know the above stats are rather crap (i've made a half harted attempt to go planted) for a real planted tank, but I've decided to strip this tank right back, and remove the light and CO2, and fill it with java ferms and anubias, while I work on getting my other tank into the EI method.

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

Thanks

Sam

Not exactly sure what it is, but think it's a from of hair algae. I sometimes get it on my glass where the spray bar hits the glass. But it's easily removed and I've never had a problem with it.

CO2, CO2 and CO2!

You need a stable 30ppm. Go upto 40ppm for a while (keep an eye on fish). Ensure there's plenty of fast growers too and it will soon disappear.

Buy another Nutrafin unit and swap the mixtures alternately. Use more yeast if you have to - have you read this http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=101380

Or better still buy pressurized!

Tubes in the post mate ;) .

Cheers George, will see what I can do. Having a bit of fun experimenting with this tank, to see what works best, etc. Will let you know how I get on!

Sam

PS pressurised?!!?!? You think I’m made of money, the fact I bought your tubes should tell you something about my bank balance!

 Fair point.

Have you tried e-bay? You could get a whole system cheap if you buy the cylinder and reg seperately in stages, thus not breaking the bank. For instance I bought a spare 500g cylinder for £10. I've seen regs for about £20 before now. High-tech doesn't have to be high expense if you know where to look.

Yeh may give that a try, but if I do that I'll have to get new bulbs, all the dry ferts that are needed (dont add them at the mo), and most of all, Ill have to change the substrate.

In other words rip the tank apart and start again, I aint planning on doing that yet! Will try my new nano out first and take things from there. But thanks for the words of encouragement, I will get round to it at the some point, I promise.

Sam

PS saving for an engagement ring at the mo too and they aint cheap either!

PPS Soppy I know, but a man's got to do, what a man's got to do :)
