Hey,

A new LFS opened around the time i started keeping fish again, i shan't mention names here. Put it this way, i've never had to go through a procedure before buying fish before. Their stock looks fantastic (i'm pretty sure i know who their main breeder is, trustable) and their guppies are simply out of this world. I live in a rural area, and have never seen guppeis this fancy.

With other decoration in my tank, they look even better and i'm pretty sure i want to keep an all-guppy tank (apart from a couple bottomfeaders and lil snails). My questions are:

- is this sensible?
- is it boring?
- how many in my 33 gallon tank?

Many thanks! ^^

Many people love/Just keep guppies so I don't see an issue with it. However, I do see a issue with breeding :p

As for how many, I have no idea.

LFS has said they'll take any babies i get and they'll be sent back to the breeder if needed; might even persuade me to get another tank! =D

I think tanks of large numbers of single fish often have more visual impact than ones with a 'mix and match' style of stocking. Anyway, it's your tank and, if that's what you want to do, then go for it!

i would recommend males only, or you will get overrun with fry. You could have around 20 males in a tank of that size.

That's fantastic - can't wait for Saturday now!

Thanks for your opinions - nothing like good advice.

Do, please take advice about keeping males only though.

If you're keeping livebearers in mixed sex groups, you need to keep at least two females to every male; male livebearers are, to put it bluntly, sex mad, and can even stress the females out to the point of death if there are too many of them.

I know your LFS has said they'll take fry from you but when you consider that each female can have 30 or 40, every 30 days, that's an awful lot of fish you could get stuck with, if the LFS change their mind

At that level of stocking, you would be ok to keep them in a 1:1 ratio, but let's be honest, female guppies are pretty boring things, whereas 20 males, especially of the same colouration would look absolutely stunning.

Not to mention their displays directed towards one another to determine dominance.

Prior to buying, i knew that the girls get stressed by males when in a low ratio, and the LFS suggested 3:1 for lower stockings, which is what i expected.

I'm going to have a think and talk with some friends abotu the fry situation, but a male tank looks like what i'll stick with.
