Alternative Filter For Biorb

Hi, I have a Biorb 30, and wondered if anybody had heard of replacing the filter system with a normal internal filter so that sand could be used to have planting? would there be any recommended filters for this? otherwise i'd look at getting something like an Aqua cube 40.

I'm on the cheap atm because i'm a recently graduated student and to use the existing biorb would be the ideal solution!
