Anyway. heres the story.

I bought Jeyes Kleen Off ammonia stuff. I worked out how many drops it took to raise the ppm in a 500ml container to 5-6. It took 8 drops.

I have a 70L tank.

70000ml / 500 = 140

So i then multplied that by 8 (drops).

Which means i have to put in 1120 drops. Time consuming yes, so i worked out how many drops were in one full medicine dropper. It came to 83. So i divided 1120 by 83 and got 13.49.

That means i have to put in 13 full squirts of ammonia to my 70L tank to get the ppm to 5-6.

This seems like alot of ammonia, and ive been reading around and people have had to add alot less to do the same job. Can anyone spot if ive calaculated wrong?

I ran a test on the tank a while later, and the ammonia levels appear to be 5-6. Its hard to tell with this test kit (dont offer me others please, its the best liquid test available in my area) but it would definatly seem to be around 5-6ppm.

The bottle of ammonia does not state the ingredients, but it does not foam and it is the reccomended brand of this site.

If anyone spots any mistakes ive made, let me know.

70 litres = 70,000 ml

To get 5 ppm you therefore need to put 0.35ml of 100% ammonia into the tank.

Your solution is 9.5% ammonia (I believe), so you need to add 3.7ml to the tank. i.e. slightly less than a teaspoonful.

Suggest you get a medicinal syringe from a chemist to measure this!

I'm also currently cycling and jeyes is the ammonia i'm using.

For a 15 litre tank, i have to add 45 drops to get it up to around 5ppm. So using very crude math, which is probably not very accurate, around 190 drops? although it all depends on size of the dropper you have etc. so come to think of it, this probably isn't very helpful. Sorry.

On a side note what liquid test kit do you have?

Obviously not a very good one. I think i might have to change all of my tank water, as i have added alot of ammonia.

Well i have the interpret liquid master test kit, and it seems to be very good, so if you are looking to get a new test kit.

Ah yes i just notcied. The 7000 should actually be 70 000 ( thanks tigerbarb) But this still puts me in a confusing situation. I have added 13 full medicine dropper worth of ammonia. My calculation seems correct and testing the tank reveals expected results. However, this seems llike too much ammonia.

Im confused.

I worked out that i added about 30ml of the stuff to my tank.

Im guessing thats far too much. Should i refill my tank water and do it again?

EDIT:

I just worked out. IF my ammonia bottle is only 9.7% ammonia, then:

30mil / 100 X 9.7 = 2.91ml.

So in actual fact i have only added 2.91ml of pure ammonia.

Right?

*Still confused*

I dont mind having to pull all the water out and do it again. I just wish i had an answer from someone.

I'ved never done fishless cycling but by adding more ammonia it's like trying to cycle a tank with more fish.

It's going to take slightly longer to cycle the tank with the ammount of ammonia you have added but at the end of the cycle you'll have more bacteria in the filter.
