I just can't get this thing quiet.... I've set it up a number of times now and just can't get the LOUD hum to go away.
I've wiggled it all I can until I can't get any more bubbles out of it. I've noticed that when wiggling it past say 50 degrees it starts to leak from by the clips, is this normal?

Please advice, I've contacted the people but they don't seem to helpful TBH.

Is it new or have you had it a while? I have the same filter but it's pretty quiet, a slight hum is all I can hear. Is it perfectly flat on the floor and not making contact with anything else around it?

It's new, I purchased it last saturday.

Yes it's perfectly flat and level. The noise isn't banging but it's very noticeable, for example we can even hear it when the TV is on :S Just a constant HUM

I have the 1400L

When you say you "Wiggled" it do you mean you've tipped the filter over in the hope to dislodge air bubbles?

The only thing that comes to mind is that the impeller assembly hasn't been placed correctly. It has a small plastic thread that it MUST sit in perfectly otherwise the impeller spins loud and unstable. If you pop the lid of the filter off and ensure that it sits flush with the rest of the filter head then you may find that could be the cause. Other than that the "hum" usually appears with all filters and generally goes with time, a week maybe?

Same with my Fluval 205 and APS 1400 both had initially wear in period.

Edit: I just noticed you said it leaks when you tip it... it shouldn't leak. Have you ensured all the hose connections are sealed tight, it could be a case of sucking air with the water through the hose.

The leak come from the side of the filter where the lid meets the canister. The hoses are all connected properly yes. I don't know enough about impellers to mess with them tbh. I'm new to fish keeping an this is my first external filter. Think I may just have a dodgy one...

If you're too new then I think making the assumption it is dodgey is a big jump to make.

Ensure you have followed the manual properly if you have little experience with externals and further more take the lid off turn it upside down so that you can see the impeller screw, it's really simple it looks like a big '+' sign. Ensure it is seated properly.

Not sure about the hum, but about the leak: have you made sure the UV bulb and cover are correctly fitted? A few of us on here have had issues where we didn't want to use the UV so didn't place it in the filter, and then the filter leaked - even if you don't use the bulb the cover needs fitting and it has to be really wedged in and turned to lock it in place, rather than just pushed in. That may be it?

To add to this debate,- I am having the exact same problem with this model of filter, have tried replacing impeller blades and Nylon shaft, which I purchased from allpondsolutions, but, this made no improvement to humming noise, I have now resorted to swithching filter off when I am in area for any length of time, leaving it on at night while in bed.
If anyone has found reason for this noise in this model, and/or a solution, your advice would be much appreciated.

Thats really is not a good idea at all, i have a APS while the quilty is cheap i have no problems with it. I did get a tetratec and its miles a head of APS

I had the same problem as Cazzie with the UV, so do check that.

I've had rattly impellers too; just go gently with it and don't let yourself get stressed with it; the fish will be fine for a couple of hours while you get it seated right.

I've found they do need time to bed in and then they get quieter.

I really like these filters; you just need to get to know them!
