Ok, my seven guppies (4 red, 3 gold/yellow) are having gangs of new york style fights in the tank. They have always played nicely before, as far as i can tell nothing has changed in the tank. My solution is to transplant some of the guppies into another tank, will they be ok with a male betta? In terms of stocking levels the tank im gonna set up is plenty big enuff but will they be ok? The guppies have relatively small tails (where they have been bitten) and are a diff colour to the betta.

Any thoughts?

I used to have guppys with a betta and they didn't get on at all well. Both species nipped each other's fins, and I ended up returning the betta. Apparently they each see each other's long fins as competition.

same here, my Betta ripped my guppies to streads.

depends on the betta

I wouldn't put the guppy in with the betta, as they can eat them as well, if they are not taking chunks out of each other see if it's just a faze.

I agree - if it isn't too violent, leave them be. Eventualy they should sort out their territories/hierarchy and settle down.

Yeah, I'd maybe get a tank division until the bullying stops, I think betta's see the guppies bright colours as a threat or something...

Bettas sometimes mistake male guppies for another betta. Most bettas will kill them.

If the aggression eprsists, a 'time-out' period over a few hours or over night in a breeding trap should be enough to teach the aggressors to behave. :)
