oh dear, i can visualise it exactly.

unfortunately there's not a lot else you can do, print it off, try your best to get them to read it and stop coming up with crazy plans.

your quite right there could be all sorts in the rain water.

also the bacteria that you need is sessile, meaning it does not live free swimming in the water, it clings to surfaces, primarily your filter media but also to gravel etc in the tank. transferring the water will do nothing except risk cross contamination.

tell them to do this properly if they don't want to buy a test kit then every day for the next 2/3 weeks at least then weekly for the next 6 months they will have to drive to the lfs, get charged a couple of quid to get them to test the water. buying a test kit of they're own will be much easier and cheaper in the long run.

edit- to put this into even better context, when my dad got the little bubble creating water wheel, I told him it was taking up too much space, the bubbles we right in the centre of the tank and the fish didnt have much room around them to swim, his reply was "don't worry, they live better with more surface area, which the bubbles create!". I'm there correcting him saying they don't live on the surface in 2d, they need more /volume/ and he cut in saying he knew better... argh.

your right about this as well, in a tank that size you need to give the fish all the room they can get.

sorry but your dad doesn't know better. I know there's a load of young forum members who will sympathise with you on this when they've had to fight tooth and nail to get they're parents to do things properly.

ultimatley though your parents have taken on responsibility for these fish's lives, they are being very irresponsible by not researching and not listening to you when you are.

your doing the right thing so just keep at your parents, if they won't listen to you for now then do 20% water changes every day until they start listening
