I did a water change this morning and went to work, 2 hours later all 7 of my discus were dead. And the bristlenose pleco with them was happy as can be. What the hell. Just what the hell.

omg thats horrible. i have no idea what happened, but if i were you i would be ******* off too.

maybe the ph was set off by your water change?

Hmm as soon as we found them dead, we did a check on peramters. The AMmonia was o PH 6.4 Nitrite 0, Nitrates 20.

The water is nasty. It has worms in it. As soon as I did the water change, there were thousands of worms floating around, just like the last time, with my zombie fish disaster.

What's the hardness & TDS of your tank water, and tap water? Is either of these any different from previous tests? What have you been treating the tap water with? What have you been feeding, how much, and how often?

If they were small white worms I believe they are harmless to fish. But they can appear when you overfeed.

Sorry about your discus, it must suck.

Omg i wont believe this. Sorry to hear that what a mass disaster.

Poor you! The only thing it can really be is the water, as it was so soon after the water change. Could be a chemical contaminant used by the water company for clearing pipes or wahtever. I think that's the most likely thing. Discus are more sensitive than yr pleco, hence they would be more likely to succumb.

Auraura, have you been in touch with your water supplier?
Also have you checked the piping, boiler and such connected to your house?
They must be living and breeding somewhere.....
Have you checked with your neighbours to see if they have encountered similar problems?
Anyway;
Sorry to hear of your loss, i know you were looking forward to getting these Discus, i'm gutted for you.
:byebye:

Eeeeuugggghhhhh - thats nasty - was it supposed to be human grade drinking water???

Sorry to hear of this :-( you hadn't had them that long had you? I think i remember the thread when you got them - where you the one who got the freebie red one??

:-( What a downer :-(

Do you happen to have a gravel substrate?

There could be many posible causes to why your discus died, and why your pleco didn't. The most obvious posible cause was that something went wrong with the water, and because pleco's like your BN is a lot more hardier/tougher than your sensitive discus when it comes to water quality, it survived while your fragile discus died.
What is the ph of the water coming out of your tap?

Hmm...

On the other hand though...Could it be posible that while you poured your new water into the tank the new water disturbed loads of worms which had been living unnoticed in the substrate in very large numbers, which the discus then suddenly gorged themselves upon and died while the pleco was unnafected because it couldn't/didn't eat the worms?
Can you describe the worms appearance? Most worms found in aquariums are harmless, and most are brought on by an excess of food in the tank which they can thrive off- i recently had a load of harmless flatworms in one of my tanks because there was certain decor in the tank which was catching a lot of waste under it which the flatworms were thriving off.

It's a bare bottom completely bare discus tank. Nothing in it. Thanks for the kind words. ANd Ph of my tap is 8.4. Water changes bring the tank Ph up about .1 ph. The water has great buffering capacity. 200 ppms of hardness, and 300 alkalinity.OUr neighbors have had tons of problemns with their water, so they bought a 2 k dollar osmosis unit and 1k de-ionizer for their entire house. Looks like we will be doing the same. I use prime as my water conditioner.
