FISHBREEDER
Fish Fanatic
Well first a little background on these fish, and sorry if it comes out bad didn't get much sleep. So, as some of you know I have a wide collection of bettas for breeding, and well more tanks that some LFS. One day, my friend and I were at wall mart (great place to buy air pumps, not so great for fish) and he points out this female betta. She had amazing fin colors, and was in far greater health than any I've seen there... Well after a killing another female in the sority tank, I placed here in a devided 2.5g where I keep my breeding females. There she blew a bubble nest! Turns out it was a Plakat male, would have been an obvious sight had I even thought that WalMart would have such a fish. SO in light of our amazing find, I bread HIM with a crowntail female, and the spawn was huge. Apx 200 fry. Things were good, until I left the lid on his tank off and he jumped for freedem only to be found by myself a few hours later dead on the carpet. Well a few weeks have passed, and I've had my heart set on my maricel find, and very much missed bettas offspring.
Yesturday I was performing a very normal water change and tank cleaning, getting un-eaten baby brine and other junk off the floor. I always go through the water I pull out to check for babies, as I'm sure we all do, and noticed about 7 dead fry. Very dissapointing, so after checking the water for amonia, nitrates, nitrities, ph, alk, and hardness the water looked great. I then went off to dinner with my girlfriend, and appon arival a couple of hours later, tons of babies were lifeless at the top of the water.
That is when my night started. I amediatly set up a rescue tank, new water, new heater, new everything, and started searching for survivors, placing each living betta in the new tank. About 4 hours of going through the tank, starting at around 9:30. Finnaly I thought that I had successfully rescued the living offspring, and decided to call it a night (after a trip to both wallmarts in town looking to see if they had any plakat males- lol lost hope I guess) Was pretty down after seeing about 50% (100 or so) fry go to betta hevan.
This morning the remaining survivors seem to be doing much better, though the tank temp droped a few degrees over night they were eating and doing fine. Water levels all ok, and only 3 fry didn't make it through the transfer. They were lucky that (being in the oil field) this was my week off. I hope this never happens again.
