Hi all, I moved to a 128 litre and have a fluval 3 pump, but have noticed that the tank produces alot of algy(however u spell it :S ) It covers the ornaments and gathers around the thermometer, why would this be is it because maybe the filter is not strong enough. I never had this problem in my smaller tank? Thanx :)

Do you have any live plants in there?
What do you have for fish?
And lastly, how long do you leave your tank lights on?

The best way to get rid of green algae IMO is to cut down on the lights on time or even leave the lights off for a week. Green alagae thrives on light so also make sure the tank is not in direct sunlight. If you have live plants, leaving the lights off for a week would unfortunately harm them aswell as the algae so bear that in mind.

If you want some good algae eaters, i'd reccommend Bristlenose Plecs, they only grow to about 5" and they love the stuff. :D

;) thanks for all advice i do have live plants not too many and my lights are on probably from 8am to 9pm! is this too long? I have just gona and turned them offbut whilst doing so i have noticed that 2 of my tetras have sort of white cotton wool growths on them what is it ?All the other fish look fine :( i did notice theat 1 of the 2 tetras had what looked like a graze on its side the other day which was this white colour but it was flat to the body not fluffy , any ideas?

I really worried now i got medications but dont know what it is

I'd cut you lights on time to 8 hours a day for a couple of weeks and see if that clears the algae.

The other problem sounds like a fungal infection. I would treat with anti-fungus meds. If you want to be sure post some pics but it sounds pretty clear to me.

do you think like the cotton wool disease thing? should i give them a salt bath if so how do i do it? And i am gonna have to treat the whole tank as i dont have another tank is that ok? :/ i hate it when this happens. And should i get interpet meds in anti fungus you say!

One more thing i am doing a 20-30% water change once a week but as i say the algy and now this i have a fluval 3 in a 128litre tank do u think this is ok? Because it worried me i also put in my old fluval 1 filter too is this ok?

Sorry about all the questions :/ Really need advice my old smaller tank was never like this :dunno:

Adding salt depends on the fish you have in your tank. If you have any scale-less fish like plecs and loaches then don't add any. If you are adding salt, make sure its aquarium salt and follow the instructions on the product.

It is fine to treat the whole tank and i have had success with interpet anti-fungus and finrot treatment so that's fine. Again just follow the instructions carefully.

Your Fluval +3 is more than enough for your tank so don't worry there and your weekly water changes are good, keep them up.

Fungal infections are very cureable but the sooner treated the more chance you have of success.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Yeah you can do, just use a reasonably large jug or something similar and make sure you don't overdose the salt, measure it carefully and use water from the tank.

The meds are much more important as they are specific to the problem. Salt has general healing properties which may also help. Won't do much good on its own though, the meds are the crucial bit.
