I have this gross red algea growing all over in my upstairs 25Gallon tall Eclipse tank. It is uncontrolable. I am constantly scraping it. Now it's growing on the gravel and everything. Any ideas?
I second the suggestion that you should take a look at the article linked there. I struggled w/ beard (red) algae for 5 months and it was wretched stuff.
I tried shocking the tank w/ hydrogen peroxide (after removing the fish to another tank) but the beard algae came back.
Here's what worked for me:
I took everything (plants included) that could be moved out of the tank and followed the instructions in the article for a bleach bath (1pt bleach: 19pts water, rinse really, really well). I add a small dose of CO2 daily and tripled the number of plants in my tank to out-compete and starve out the beard algae. The bleach really did a number on my Ambulia but it's slowly recovering...
but best of all....the Tropica Crypt isn't covered w/ that disgusting mat of red algae any more, my rocks aren't black & gross and I haven't seen any threads in weeks!
