too much algae caN BE UNSIGHTLY BUT I PERSONALLY DON'T MIND A BIT ON MY ROCKS AND BOGWOOD.
Real plants do not cause algae. too much nutrients in the water (i.e. phosphates) and not enough reAL PLANTS CAN CAUSE ALGAE.

sorry capslock seems to have a mind of its own

Too much light can cause algae. How many hours a day do you have the light on for? Is your tank in the sunlight?

Algae is a fact of life, it comes along with fish keeping. You can do things to reduce the amount growing, or capitalise it and buy some Otto's. They're great little fish and love algae. I've got one in my 15g, and will be adding 3 more tomorrow.

ok cool,i dont mind it either was just wondering.
not in direct sunlight but i have the light on around 6-8 hours a day, trimmed my plants down the other day, also cutting out any dead bits cause these arent good(not doing there job)maybe should have let them grow and float across the top......

6-8 hours is fine.

Algae-eating fish (or invertebrates) would be something worth considering if you have room. There are plenty of interesting options. No huge need to worry about a little bit of algae though.

What is your Phosphate (PO4) level in your tank? Generally the measurable phosphate level should be below 0.05 ppm. If it is high, that could be your problem.
