if you have to go the chemical route, and we all do/will at some point,
I highly recomend Esha protalon 707.
really does exactely what it says on the box
So it'll be safe to use with live plants right? And won't harm the beneficial bacteria?
I just wanna make sure if I end up getting some heh.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to look for it when we go to the petstore.. that is if we even carry it over here in the US heh.
The-Wolf is very knowledgeable so if he says that one works, then I would trust it. You do, however, try to figure out what type algae it is and what is causing it and fix the problem. Otherwise, it will only come back and you will become dependent on chemicals.
Anyway, where is the algae growing? Is this the 'cute' stuff on the glass or is it everywhere? Some fish, as you are aware, do eat algae and could be beneficial to your tank. Can you ID the algae?
It's just the brown stuff right now.
Spots on the glass, some on the plants.. notice it mainly on the decor though (rock and a fake vase thing).
Can't get any more fish to put into the tank.
Well... not really can't more like won't. The tank is a 10gallon divided with a male and a female betta. And I just wouldn't want to risk sticking an algae eater in there on either side and the bettas getting too aggressive with it.
As for why the algae is growing. I have no idea. I'm hoping it'll just go away on it's own, but if not.. well.. algae remover here I come
if you have serious problems with it then yes you should look into the underlying causes, however for most 'standard' set up's you're always gonna get some algae. if it's just on the ornaments and glass then just get a washing up sponge and give them a scrub every couple of weeks.
How new is the tank? It sounds like the brown algae that is common in most new tanks. You should be able to wipe the glass clean (the algae magnets work well). And when you do a water change, rub it loose from the plants and decor with your fingers and vacuum it out. In a tank that size, you could try some otos or some algae eating shrimp. I don't think you would have to worry about aggression from the bettas with either of those.
