Hi Folks,
Looking for some advice and guidance from all you experts ;-)
Due to the recent death of my father I now need to move his fish tank from his place to mine (my daughter is going to have it). It’s only a 5 minute drive and so as long as I plan it out properly, it should be completed within an hour or so.
It’s a 64L tank with 17 fish in it (5 plattys, 2 flying foxes, 2 harlequins, 2 cherry barbs, 3 zebra danios, 2 ghourami’s, 1 neon tetra and 5 amano shrimp).
However, we also have a case of black hair algae....it originally started a few months back but I did a major water change and bleach treated (5% solution) all the rocks, filter case plants etc and that seemed to get rid of it. Alas it has now returned and although not too bad, this resiting of the tank offers me the opportunity to try and get rid of it for good.
Here’s what I’m planning on doing:
1) Put in a 2nd filter and run it alongside the current one for a week or so, before removing the current one and bleach treating it ahead of the move.
2) Dump 50% of the existing tank water at the time of the move and retain the other 50% for the re-setup.
3) Keep the filter sponges in a bag of tank water.
4) Bag the fish by species.
4) Dump all the substrate (fine gravel) as this is also showing signs of black hair as well.
5) Bleach soak all the plants, rocks, ornaments.
6) Bleach treat the tank interior.
7) Resite the tank.
8) Replace all the substrate (fine gravel) with new.
9) Add the plants, filter and water (I've recently changed to only using RO water as we have high nitrates in our tap supplies) and away we go.
Do you think I've got all the bases covered to get rid of this pesky pest?
Thanks,
Fred.
