Algae Question For My Oto Cat

ok well there is no visible algae in my tank so im wondering if the oto tank is even eating anything when he is sucking on side of tank.
so i noticed there is algae outside where its damp if i smeared a little on side of tank would it be bad?
possibly a stupid question i dunno its why im asking first lol
