Algae Problem ?

I`ve been fishless cycling a tank for a week and tonight I noticed something that looks like cotton wool on the heater suckers, when I touched a bit it felt slimy

Is this a type of algae ? I couldn`t find anything that resembled it in the algae guide

If it is algae how do I get rid of it ?

this is probably a bacterial growth, absolutely harmless and quite common during a cycle, it will just disapear in its own time (before your cycle finishes) you can wipe it away if you so wish....

After further research it is probably fungus imported in with a piece of bogwood that was too big to soak in a bucket

It was only on the rubbers of the heater and thermometer as far as I can see

So far I`ve turned everything off and removed the suckers and bogwood. The stuff is floating about the tank like snot ugh !!! I`ll net and vac it out tomorrow. Would it be worth getting a fungus treatment just to be on the safe side ? I think I`ll sling the bogwood out

It's a type of mould/fungus that grows on the stuff they use to release silicone rubber from molds - its also feeds on the ammonia in the tank. Wipe it off ignore it. Fish will eat it - its harmless and will go in its own time as the tank settles.

I wouldn't add any kind of med for it.

That would explain why it`s only on the mouldings
