I have a Jewel Rio 180 containing Discus, Siamese Fighting Fish and Tetras but have a big problem with algae. The tank has been up and running for about 18 months and the fish are fit and healthy. The water is RO water with added minerals.

I can't get any algar eaters to survive in the tank!

Ammonia - 0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - trace
pH - 6

Have been using hair algae treatment for quite a while now and appears to be happening, if anything it's getting worse.

Any ideas would be gratefully received!

Do you keep the discus in a bare bottom tank? or planted? treatment would be a bit different between the two.

and check phosphate too.

They are in a planted tank with sand substrate. Not checked the phosphate levels but I will do tomorrow

in that case, have a look at the pinned article on algae. here

My mate had a juwel 180 tank. Had terrible trouble with hair algae. He had to rip out EVERYTHING i mean filter meadia, substrate, juwel foam backing, treat with major overdosing of interpet anti-hair algae for two weeks! This was his last resort as he tried bleach, boiling, keeping lights off for a month and all kinds of things
