First off, here are ALL the stats for my two fish tanks:

29 gallon 2WPG
neon/glowlight/cardinal tetras, black widow tetras, amano shrimp, cory cats, kulhi loaches.
Flourite substrate w/ small gravel and a few root tabs.
Weekly liquid ferts "flourish excel" and small dosages during the week
weekly 30-40% water changes
plants include Amazon swords, ozelot sword, java fern, java moss, jungle val, wideleaf sag, water sprite/wisteria
Hagen CO2 system w/bubble ladder, mixture changed when water is changed
Timer set for 4 on 2 off cycle
all water stats are fine

5 gallon roughly 3WPG
1 betta, 2 ottos
sand substrate with root tabs
weekly liquid ferts, in VERY small dosages
weekly 30-40% water changes
plants include contortion val, anubias nana, micro chain sword, a couple others that couldn't grow in the 29 gallon
all water stats are fine

Okay, now to get to the problem. The majority of plants in my 29 gallon refuse to grow at a normal rate if they aren't slowly dying back. The Jungle Val and water wisteria are the worst off. The Jungle Val (all 15 or so plants) have died down to very small leaves, about 3 inches max. The water sprite has horrible hair algae, I did a 3 day blackout and cut the CO2, 2 days later and there is hair algae all over the place. I tried fixing these problems with amano shrimp, CO2 injection and a set photo period but it has not helped a single bit. The plants are growing like when the tank had 1.5 WPG wth no CO2.

What really gets me is the 5 gallon tank with no set photo period and no CO2 injection works great, 10 times better than the 29 gallon. I have even moved dying plants over to the 5 gallon and they have started growing perfectly again... Also, just because I was curious I took a large hunk of water sprite from the 29 gallon which had hair algae all over the place and within a week it was all gone. And the hair algae wasn't fixed by the Ottos in the tank, they weren't even in the picture at the time.

So I ask all you planted tank gurus, what am I doing so wrong here? From what i'm seeing, the 5 gallon low tech tank is doing tons better and it's driving me crazy...

First to state I'm nowhere near to being a plant guru, but I would suggest that you stop using the Flourish Excel and get 2 Hagen Kits.

Mainly because Flourish Excel reputedly kills Vals (see plantgeek.net) and also, why use it when you have Hagen CO2 already?

This problem may also be related to the other plants having a problem.

I currently have 1.3WPG if you count the tank as 29G or 1.5WPG if you count the water as 26G, and I currently use 1 DIY kit although I have another ready due to my 'soon to happen' lighting upgrade. My plants thrive, except for the highlight ones which are now out due to the low light I have.

There is a touch of 'furry' algae on the leaves but am assured this is normal, and the fasting days I have implemented now reduce this each time.

I also have some brown beardy algae due to having a carbon pad in for 2 days at the weekend (and still using the lights) but now I have it out again and ferts back in, the plants are taking the nutrient that the algae used for these 2 days.

Thats my tip, although I am definately no guru and won't be for a long time yet.

Umm I'm not sure why you'd suggest not using liquid ferts, CO2 doesn't do the same thing at flourish excel, two completely different things.

Do you have any links about it killing vals? If it does i'll switch over to another fert.

I'm not suggesting to stop ferts,

I'm saying use flourish not flourish Excel, because excel is the one that some plant sites say kills vals.

Or move onto Tropica, or any other fert without the CO2 element (I assume that this is what kills vals)

Have a look on plantgeek.net - plant guide. clikc on any VAL and it says the following:

***Special note*** This plant seems to be sensitive to Flourish Excel, to the point it "melts" completely off if given enough.

This site has Seachem as one of its sponsors, and they wouldn't sponsor a site that said this about one of their products if it weren't proven.

Okay I guess i can look into flourish and not flourish excel, but excel is what I use in the 5 gallon and the vals in that tank are doing great

Hi Tsi, Can you give kh and gh reading from both tanks? Just a thought at the monent. :look:

Those are the two things i'm missing right now :(

I'll be getting those two test kits with my next paycheck.
