I have an algae, like many others in my tank.

Most of my plants are low to medium light and I am running about 2.2 watts per gallon. I use aquarium vital as my carbon source and I have treated the tank with maracyn, which has killed most of the slime, however, I am in need of treatments, especially for hair like algae.

my filtration is adequate, and the tank is decently stocked. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Thanks,

i am having the same problem...with the same 2.2ish watts and medium to moderate plants. the algae is ridiculous and is getting to the point that i cant get it off my plants, and it makes them almost die

I am no expert on algae but I know Flourish excel kills many algaes. Then you have to correct the nutrient imbalance that is leading to the growth of algae. A picture would help to see what nutrients deficiencies the plants are suffering. I corrected imbalance in my tank which BBA flourished in by adding KNO3.

what algae are you getting? Algue guide in my sig if you need help/.

That algae guide was great! It is either staghorn or cladphora. I am currently using aquarium vital for my carbon source and my water flow is fine (one fluval 305 and one external filter for a 60 gallon in a 55 gallon tank) I travel a lot so I think the fiance is probably over feeding. I have roottabs to help the plant growth as well. I am going to assume it is my carbon source.

would I use flourish excel with the aquarium vital or are they the same thing? if that is the case it seems flourish excel seems to be the product of choice here, So i assume I would switch to that and overdose the tank for a little bit? let me know and I will send the fiance to the store asap!

Thanks for the help and that algae guide!

They are not the same. Flourish excel will probably kill the algae. It kills a lot of variety of algae even though that is not what is sold for. You still need to get the nutrients balanced or it will come back. I think CSM+B would help.

CSM+B? So I can use the flourish excel to kill the algae and continue to use the aquarium vital as the carbon source?

I have upped the amount of aquarium vital because I believe I have a lack of c02. I am being relocated so once I move the tank I will move towards a carbon dioxide source.

Thanks for all the help, once I get the algae under control I will post pictures of the tank.
