Algae on snail shells

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to remove hair aglae from snails? The snails don't mind the algae, they just don't look so nice.

I have read on another forum that you can brush gently with a toothbrush. It was written by a person who knows a lot about snails. Have never tried it myself. My Bristlenose Plec has also tried to remove some!
