There are black/green dots on the in and out lines to my filter (rena canister) and I was curious if this was algae or something else? Anyone else have this issue? How can I get rid of it coming back again and is this a sign of something bad in my filter? No algae is in the tank of course because the cichlids already ate it I am sure

Hi, yes I have the same issue. For one RENA was not smart and made their lines clear, this allows light in.

I THINK it is algae. I was told on this site, to not worry about it. Ive had my "line algae" for 1 yr now. I actually am keeping discus with this filter with do deaths of any of my fish in the past 8 months except a jumper.

I am going to get darker lines in the future some day...but I am not too concerned about it. My eheim filter in my other tank has the same thing to a lesser extent, I think due to the darker lines...

Oh alright, maybe i'll get those black wire cover things from home depot and I'm sure that will stop it!

Use a baby bottle cleaning brush with string attached to each end and draw back and forth to clean the pipework. Put a little weight on one end of the string to initially git it through the pipe.

I used a rifle cleaner with my filter clean brushed taped on, did a good job, now I keep my window shut so that algae is not getting any help!

I cleaned my filter tubes last night. Simple method is put the pipes in hot water, they will go all soft and squishy, fill the pipe with hot water and leave a gap at the end. Put your thumbs over each end of the pipe and SHAKE!

It cleaned my tubes in 2 mins flat and works up a sweat lol!
