Algae In Sand

hi

i have a problem with algae growing throughout my sand substrate. is there anything i can do to remove it apart from emptying the whole thing out and cleaning it? its a tanganyikan cichlid tank (shellies) so dont want to disturb them too much. can you buy tablets/treatment or anything??

Algae is caused by an imbalance in one form or anoher, find the imbalance (light/fertz etc) and you find the cure to the algae.

So, how much light does the tank get (through lamps and natural sunlight), what do you add to the tank and how often/how do you clean it.
