 Quite typical of me, it turns out they were getting some more plants in later on, which would have been ideal as I could have bought some other species and started the 'planted' look, but oh well

Yup, thats the way! Don't worry about breaking some of the roots if they are in the sponge, but try to keep them on if possible. 2cm will be fine, you could even plant the stems length-wise with hygro and roots will grow from any part under the substrate. Whatever is easier to keep it down will do, but it will grow floating tooIt came in a pot, should I just remove the plant & sponge from the container, cut open the sponge to find the roots, make a dent in the substrate and then pop it in? My sand is only about 2cm deep, is this enough for it? I decided I quite like it and want to keep it
