i always wanted to know what kind of fish are alga eaters......i always thought they were some kind of pleco

Depends what you mean.

Some (most?) plecos will eat algae.

If you mean things like "Siamese Algae Eaters" or "Chinese Algae Eaters", then I believe they are cyprinids.

ye i ment the chinese algae eaters

Watch out for chinese algae eaters, one of mine, a 10cm one pinned down a 2cm sev and sucked on him, not killing it right away, but it did die from shock, they fight with alot of fish including alot of cichlids, oscars will eat them up right away as well. They are also a cold water fish, and breed in warmer water. But get ready as they are pretty agressive. I was breeding this fish once, dunno how, but just did, i brought 6 and ended up with 18 witch tells me they are not good perants.

A uge number of fish are called 'agae eaters' ranging from tropical plecs to coldwater loaches. It's important to know which one you are going for because they are very different. Otos are algae eaters and get to an inch and a half, common plecs eat algae when smaller and get to 18 inches.

From http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Algae-Eaters/:

The Chinese Algae Eater belongs to family Gyrinocheilidae, although it resembles both loaches and Algae Eating barbs ... There are still some unclear points in the systematic classification of this genus and it is possible that the species most often imported isn't G. aymonieri but G. kaznakovi. There are also two other species (G. pustulosus and G. pennocki).

Their distant cousins... Siamese Algae Eaters, false SAEs and Flying Foxes, are all barbs.

All of the above discussed fish are Cyprinids.

chinese algae eaters does eat algae, but it get big and agressive, to both its own kind, simmilar looking fish and slow moving fish, as chinese algae eaters love the skin coating of other fish.

I have two in a planted tank and its doing a great job on the algae, as we can get any SAE localy. but rosy barbs eats the same amount of algae as a same size SAE.. Rosy barbs woun't eat red algae.
