I've never tried but Marimo might not grow in brackish water. Moreover, they grow so slow that I doubt they can compete with the fast growing algae of the annoying kind. I have 2 in my tropical tank and when the carpet algae took over the tank, they actually grow on top of the algae balls. Nonetheless, the carpet algae did not survive my all out assault but the algae balls are growing pretty healthy since then.
