Looking for help. I have a 30 gallon aqaurium that has 3 emerald gouramis, 2 pakistani rainbow, 1 pleco, 1 arrawana, and had 1 chinese algae (now parted). Planted tank with CO2 System and gravel substrate. Running a Fluval 404. I had a very healthy tank.

Problem is that 1 of my 2 kids ( 2 + 4 years old) had knocked over the CO2 systems pot which drained back into my aqaurium. If I am not mistaken the mixture inside the pot is rudimentary alchohol which gasses off C02 while fermenting. Tank is somewhat cloudy; possibly sugar from CO2 pot?

I have already changed out a little over 1/3 of the tanks water and treated it with tap water conditioner.

I then changed out the peat in my filter system and cleaned out the foam in the Fluval. Running max filtration at the moment.

Any other suggestions

Tank size:30 gallon
pH: 7.0
ammonia: 0 ppm
nitrite: no test kit
nitrate:no test kit
kH:no test kit
gH: I know, I know, I gotta go get a test kit
tank temp: 78

Ye same advice here, active carbon will remove almost everyting, but u only need to use for 5-7 days, as it remove nuterants needed by your plants and much longer than that you may notice the plants suffering.

As for water changes you may want to do daily 10-15% for 5 days.

How cloudy was the tank water when you found out the co2 mix have been knocked over? If it was really cloudy then go for 50% water change, otherwise the 30% you did would be fine. If you have activated carbon then use them for 3 day up to a week to get all the nasties out.

It was not that bad when I came home from work less than 1/3 of tank was whitish, panic mode hit and I changed out the water as described and peroformed the filter maintenance. It was a little after that that the CO2 pot was discovered. Approx 1 hour later the water showed little visibility.

I will add charcoal to my filtration system and hope for the best.

Sound advice, thanks. I was wondering about the plants and how they would handle using charcoal in the system.

Good luck with it......

if the kids are a problem sell them on ebay!!!!

I second this advise.

I do not think I would get as much for the kids as I have now lost in the fish. Tank got worse overnight. Changed out another 45% water this a.m. Lost the Arrowana and 2 Rainbow. Managed to get the Gouramis into another tank (they seam o.k.) The pleco likes the booze tank and is doing not bad; the bugger is pretty big and does not want to be relocated. Here's hoping all is well.

Arrrr soz for the lose loosing an arrowana must be hard!!!!!!

Performed another 1/3 water change and ran filter at full flow. The tank is clearing up not bad. Everytime I do a water change there is a glucose line that I clean.

The Gouramis are doing well in a 10 gallon with 3 guppies; I might leave them in it.

The Pleco continues to be stubborn and is doing very well! I am considering what to put in the tank once I am confident the water condition is cleaned up completely?

Thanks for your assistance in this blunder!

Considering the dodgy alcohol your Plec has been drinking, I think he deserves a single malt in the tank for Christmas.

Seriously, as long as you are treating your tapwater correctly, up the water changes.

Furthermore, don`t get those test kits for Christmas, get them now! They may become less important on an established tank, but if I were you, I would assume that your tank could be starting over again due to this disaster.

P.S. Really sorry about the deaths. I`ve got three kids of my own for sale on eBay right now.
