We used to have a lutino fire/red oscar, and noticed as with many other lutino/albino animals that his sight wasn't cracking, although he coped pretty well as an only fish (he didn't cope well at all with silver dollars).

I'm looking at getting two oscars, one will be a baby tiger oscar that we've already met (not albino). We're getting oscars because my partner can't enjoy the tank as a community as much as me, because he's partially sighted. So ideally we'd have two very different oscars so he can tell them apart.

I was thinking of getting a baby lutino/albino tiger oscar as a companion for the baby tiger oscar, but having seen one in the fish shop that can't see a thing (and swims into the tank sides, filter, etc, and has problems finding food), I'm wondering whether all lutino/albino oscars have sight problems?

If so, it puts me off getting an albino/lutino as a companion for the tiger, as it could lead to bullying or the albino missing out on food.

Finally, as a very odd request, does anyone have a large sized picture of a red oscar and a tiger oscar together so I can see if Baz can tell them apart? I know it's an odd request, but if he can't tell them apart, it will make a differene to what we decide.

you could get a plain black oscar and then a velvet oscar?
they have compeltely orange sides and a greenish brown head.
you could google the pictures ? most albino fish ive owned have bin fine sightwise the only fish iahve that swims into things is my snakehead but hes got 1 eye :p

I have a near full grown albino Oscar and he see's just fine. He spots me coming from the opposite end of our lounge (about 20-25 feet) and appears at the front of the tank begging for food.

I also had another albino years ago and again, no sight problems. :good:

Hmmm maybe I've just been unlucky then and only met the odd ones out *lol*. The one I met yesterday couldn't see a bloomin' thing, was completely blind. And my old one could see, but not very well. I ust assumed it was an albino thing because many albino animals are well known for sight problems.

Thanks for the replies, it helps me weigh things up better. Maybe if I hear more experiences I can decide for or against albinos. Thanks! :good:
