so i have recently noticed from looking at my cory with unusual behavior that one of its whiskers are gone and that a red spot has taken the place on where the whisker used to be( it still had it but its been shortened by about 1/2 of its original length ). before i add any bacterial or fungus medicine(depending on what comes out), i wanted to know your ideas on what could of caused it.

Water Parameters

Ph 7.5
Gh 6
Kh/ N/a
Temperature 78-80* F
Water is cleaned about every 3-4 days(gravel cleaned every week on friday)
Gravel is dull sided, several heavy rocks dug into the gravel so that the snails can hide.

No sign of fin clamping/tail nipping from other corys.

Unusual behavior in cory

Not hanging around the other corys, hanging around the mid-top area of tank, hiding under the log when i turn the light in the tank off.
Not seeming to be eating( although i could be wrong as i dont see any of my corys eating untl a couple hours after the wafers have been suited in the water )
Snails seem to be hanging around that cory, maybe its in the process of dying( this cory has been in the LFs for about 2 years when i took it so its probally about 3 years old now)

Well, it's gravel, like pebbles right? Not sand? That's usually the source of whisker loss.

Agreed, gravel unless its very smooth and rounded is the worst medium for cories.

its a mix of smooth and "hard" gravel. should i swap it for sand when i get paid again?
should i be worried with his behavior though? i havent seen the cory swim in the mid-top area before. Is this something done with his whiskers being damaged?

UPDATE ON CORY

During its last final hours of life it had started to swim upside down, then layed on the bottom for a couple hours, About 20 minutes ago his breathing had slowed. Causing him to start floating towards the top of the tank, their he died. RIP my only fish to have died in this tank as i had moved my corys over to this tank.

2 left that i will be keeping an eye on.

:( i will miss this little guy

oh no, Im sorry.... he probably got an infection that he couldnt fight off.
Before I read the whole thing I was going to say that I inherited 2 bronze corys, one had one whisker, when I bough my fish tank 5 years ago, but he had half his face covered in a red sore and missing his barbel, the tank had a mixture of sand and fine gravel (well it wasnt that fine, when I started to remove it it felt more sharp than fine!)
I replaced the gravel with play sand and he went from strength to strength today he has only a slight opening where his mouth should be and one barbel but hes doing good, him and the other cory are mother and father to all the other 6 corys I have in there now.
Sorry about your little fish.

his bottom was a pure white blob(like a fungus had got to him) from what it felt like it also felt smooth compared to his rough and scaly body

Are there still any cories in your tank, or was that the only one?

i have 2 left, had 4 but they both died, one from old age(from what i can tell) and the other from this whisker loss
